Openings

We seek highly motivated researchers to join our research group as postdoctoral researcher, postgraduate students, and research assistants. We welcome candidates from various engineering backgrounds, including but not limited to Mechanical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Computer Science, or related fields. The candidates should be passionate about the research themes of our group and are expected to have good spoken and written English communication skills. Prospective PhD students

Full-time PhD students for Sep 2025 intake.

Research area:

Smart and ultraprecision manufacturing, surface engineering, soft robotics

​

Scholarships:  
– PhD Studentships: Monthly stipend of 17,800+ HKD (approximately US$42,460)
– Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS): Annual stipend of HK$27,600 (approximately US$3,500) with conference travel allowance, tuition fee waiver, guaranteed first-year on-campus housing, etc.

Requirements:
1. Both master and bachelor’s degrees are welcome.
2. Admission requirement by Graduate School:
2.1. Normally hold:

  • A Master’s degree; OR

  • A Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent qualification), conferred by a recognised university.

2.2. English: obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which English was the medium of instruction; or

  • An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR

  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 or above for the Internet-based test.

3. Self-motivated, with good hands-on ability

4. With top 20% SCI journals is a bonus.

Prospective Postdoc/Research engineer

Calling applicants for RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme (PDFS) 2023/24.

​

The scheme supports for a period of 36 months in terms of full-time appointment as a postdoctoral fellow (PdF) at a UGC-funded university, including CityU. For each awardee, he or she will receive an annual stipend of around HK$400,000 per year for basic salary as well as a conference and research-related travel allowance.

​

Basic Requirement: he/she should have obtained/been conferred a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification on or after 1 January 2020 (i.e. not more than three years before 2023), or will complete the requirement of a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification by 31 August 2023.

​

Candidates will be assessed by:
1. record of academic excellence;
2. research ability and track record to date;
3. leadership potential in the respective field;
4. merit of the proposed research project(s) /activities;
5. potential impact of the proposed research project(s); and
6. university’s support.

We welcome PhD candidates from Mainland Universities apply for the Joint PhD Programme （城大联合培养博士研究生项目）. CityU will provide shortlisted PhD candidate with two-year FULL scholarship (One year in HK and the other year in Shenzhen).
